Abstract Scope |
Bandgap adjustability is a pressing topic relevant to many fields focused on energy efficiency. The ability to tune the bandgap of materials through chemical alterations would be a valuable asset, particularly in smart window technologies. To better understand this relationship, compositions in the AgBiBr1-xIx system were synthesized in the solid state. The products’ structure was characterized through powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and Rietveld refinement, revealing the materials to be of the CdCl2 structure type (space group R-3m). Temperature dependent investigations into the AgBiBr4 composition demonstrated a color change at high temperatures, indicating a significant thermochromic effect. Temperature dependent XRD provided evidence for increased lattice parameters, implying a correlation between electron-phonon coupling and the thermochromism present in the system. A difference in color was also observed between the AgBiBrI3 composition and its AgBiBr4 counterpart, indicating that halide substitution is an effective method for bandgap tuning in this material system. |
