Presentation Title Exploring the Synthesis, Structure, and Ionic Conductivity of Li5TiN3

Abstract Scope Recent research has shown that lithium metal is an ideal anode material for Li-ion batteries due to its high energy density. The challenge with lithium metal anodes lies in lithium reactivity with various electrolytes and formation of lithium dendrites, both of which lead to cell degradation and failure. A potential strategy to mitigate this is to separate the anode-electrolyte interface by coating the anode with a compound that is both stable against lithium and is a good ion conductor. Previous computational studies have found that nitrogen-rich lithium ternary nitride, Li5TiN3, has predicted stability against Li. Additionally, analysis of the compound’s structure suggests potential high ionic conductivity. Here, we synthesize Li5TiN3 through bulk solid-state methods and explore its ionic conductivity, which has not been reported before. Preliminary electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) shows low ionic conductivity at room temperature, suggesting the compound is unlikely to be suitable in Li-ion battery applications.
