Teck Metals Ltd. has been operating an integrated zinc-lead smelter since the early 1900s at Trail, British Columbia, Canada. Two fluidized bed roasters treat zinc concentrates and plant recycles to produce calcine for the downstream leaching process, and an SO2 laden off-gas that is treated at the acid plants and ammonia absorption plant. Roaster online time and driven rates have steadily increased through continuous improvement initiatives resulting in markedly increased productivity. This paper reviews the key initiatives that have taken place to achieve these improvements.
