Metal thiophosphates (MTP) represent an exciting phase space of 2D materials to explore. With large variability in cation composition and crystalline structure, optical properties in this family show promise for a range of optoelectronic device applications. The temperature dependent structural single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) and photoluminescent (PL) data of the bimetallic MTPs XScP2S6 (X=Ag,Cu) are reported here. The literature structure of AgScP2S6 is inconsistent with our findings, and the first reported structural data of the monoclinic CuScP2S6 is presented. Both compositions of MTPs show extremely broad PL signal (~200nm) centered around 500nm in AgScP2S6 and 600nm in CuScP2S6 excited at 400nm. We note a particularly unique sub-bandgap PL signal present in AgScP2S6 across all temperatures at 580nm with 514nm excitation. We suggest that this sub-bandgap PL is related to the anionic backbone of the MTPs and may be present in other compositions of interest to varying degrees. |
