Abstract Scope |
Transparent non-cubic rare-earth doped fluorapatite ceramics, which has relatively high emission cross section, was fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique. By using the low temperature and short time sintering of the SPS resulting in suppression of grain growth, we succeeded in fabricating full densification transparent ceramics with average grain size of approximately 100 nm. Their in-line transmittance was comparable to the theoretical values though composing crystal grains are almost randomly oriented. For Nd- and Yb-doped FAP ceramics, laser oscillation were demonstrated. The current laser specification is not high; however, they are expected to be further improved by optimizing fabricating process of the ceramics, laser cavity setup and configuration. In the presentation, the detail of these samples and the perspectives of the study will be discussed. |
