Abstract Scope The need to mitigate carbon dioxide emissions from the cement industry has generated immense interest in sustainable and environmentally alternatives. This study examines the effects of incorporating snail shell ash (SSA), an agricultural waste with high calcium carbonate content, to improve the physico-mechanical properties of clay bricks as a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to cement. SSA is first added to clay at various proportions and different drying methods (oven, sun and room temperature drying) are employed to elucidate the effects of drying on the SSA-reinforced clay bricks. Subsequently, the physical-mechanical properties are characterized using energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and mechanical testing under compression. The compressive strengths of the oven-dried SSA-reinforced bricks are significantly improved compared to the clay-only bricks. The findings of this work have implications for developing sustainable building materials based on agricultural wastes.
