Presentation Title F-8: LPBF of Nd-based Permanent Magnets
Author(s) Sudha Krishnan, Jeffrey Shield
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Sudha Krishnan
Abstract Scope Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is a promising additive manufacturing technique to fabricate fully dense, net shape Nd-Fe-B-based permanent magnets while achieving design flexibility and waste reduction. The primary challenge in melt-processed fabrication techniques is obtaining the proper microstructures. In this work, the solidification conditions during LPBF are simulated by melt spinning at moderate (5-20 m/s) wheel speeds. This allows batch-scale alloy development for microstructure optimization. Selected alloys are then printed using LPBF. The printing parameters have been optimized and the samples in the shape of a thin wall of about 2 to 3 mm in height were additively manufactured. This talk will detail the magnetic, microstructure, and density measurements that were carried out on the printed parts. Relatively good as-built magnetic properties were achieved, though the structures are isotropic, and full-density parts were produced.
