Presentation Title Uncertainty of Microstructure in Additively Manufactured Heat Exchangers and Solar Receivers for CSP Applications

Abstract Scope Additive manufacturing technologies have advanced to the stage of printing complex part-size geometries that construct essential components in concentrated solar-thermal power (CSP) plants, such as heat exchangers and solar receivers. However, understanding how the microstructure varies in these large and complex components has yet to be studied thoroughly. This research conducts LPBF fabrication, microstructure analysis, and co-design of Haynes 282 CSP components with complex geometries (thin walls, sharp edges, and overhangs) and large part-scale dimensions (approaching the build limits of the printer). The variation and uncertainty of microstructural features such as porosity, grain size, and secondary phase formation are quantified at various regions and heights of the components. We use novel image processing techniques to rapidly quantify data from scanning electron microscopes and computed tomography. This research provides insights into co-designing the CSP components by understanding the uncertainty of LPBF printing associated with complex geometries and excessive build volumes.
