Abstract Scope |
The maximisation of mechanical properties such as strength and toughness is an important driver for engineering alloys design. Contributions to mechanical properties arise from various microstructural features dictated by the alloy chemistry as well the process conditions. For specific case of low carbon steel taken up for case study, the complex heat treatment process defines the complex microstructure comprising precipitates and multiscale martensitic microstructure which dictate the final properties. In the approach towards designing new microstructure for a well reported base alloy, first step is in studying the reported microstructure and extracting features sensitive to process conditions to understand the process-microstructure correlations. As second step, machine learning model is developed to identify key microstructural features correlating with experimentally measured mechanical properties. These two steps form the components in identifying newer microstructure from heat treatment modifications and the resultant properties prediction and thus gives insights on microstructural engineering towards alloy design. |
