Abstract Scope In this work, the microstructural evolution and corrosion behavior of surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) AA7075-T651 alloy have been investigated. Toward this, the potentiodynamic polarization, cyclic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy characterizations were performed on samples that were SMAT at different temperatures and milling conditions. The results indicate, a reduction in corrosion rate and increment in surface impedance in SMAT processed samples as compared to as-received condition. To verify the electrochemical properties, the post-corrosion microstructural characterizations such as oxide thickness measurement through the x-ray photo-electron spectroscopy. Overall, an improved corrosion resistance in an aluminum 7075 alloy was obtained with a generation of surface nano-crystalline layer via SMAT process.
