    | Abstract Scope | A systematic study on the microstructure evolution and mechanical behavior at room temperature of interstitial CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloys (HEAs) with varying nitrogen contents is presented. After annealing,two distinct types of microstructure can be observed: fully recrystallized HEAs with 0.5, 1, 2 at.% nitrogen and partially recrystallized HEAs with 3 at.% nitrogen. There are threefold effects of nitrogen on the microstructure: i) reducing the size of recrystallized grains; ii) leading to a certain volume fraction of non-recrystallized zone; and iii) causing the formation of a higher volume fraction of nano-nitrides. Both the strength and ductility increase with 0.5 at.% and 1 at.% nitrogen, while yield and ultimate strengths increase accompanied by the decrease of elongation with higher nitrogen contents. However, the HEAs with 3 at.% nitrogen can still retain a good ductility (~30% elongation) with a significant strength improvement (yield strength by ~80% and ultimate strength by ~40%, respectively). |
