Abstract Scope The concept of entropy stabilization is popular in alloys and recently in ceramics due to their large compositional space, which can be used to tune properties. High entropy carbide ceramics (HECCs) have shown the potential to outperform traditional ceramic materials in harsh irradiation and high temperature environments of advanced nuclear reactors. This work studies the mechanical and thermal performance of novel high entropy carbide ceramics and their correlation with microstructures. HECCs with increasing lattice distortion (ZrC, (ZrHf)C, (ZrHfNb)C, (ZrHfNbTa)C, (ZrTaNbTi)C, and (ZrHfNbTaTi)C) were synthesized using spark plasma sintering technique. Mechanical performance at room and high temperature was evaluated using in-situ micropillar compression testing inside a scanning electron microscope equipped with a focused ion beam. Thermal conductivity and diffusivity measurements were performed using a thermal conductivity microscope. Thermal properties of HECCs were correlated with phonon dispersion relationships obtained using density functional theory calculations and ultra-high-energy resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy measurements.
