Rare-earth-doped cobalt ferrites exhibit an excellent combination of magnetic properties viz. saturation magnetication (Ms), coercivity (Hc), magnetostriction (λ) , and strain-rate sensitivity (dλ/dH). We evaluate Ce-substituted cobalt-ferrites, Co1+xCexFe2-2xO4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.04), processed under the influence of a magnetic field. The Ce-substituted cobalt-ferrites were fabricated by solid-state technique, by a sequence of processes comprising calcination, granulation, compaction under the influence of a magnetic field, and sintering. The ferrites having Ce substituted up to x = 0.03 comprised the spinel phase, while excess Ce (x = 0.04) resulted in the CeO2 phase together with the spinel phase. The average grain size was less than ~25 µm. The lattice parameter incremented with increasing Ce. Ms declined with the increment in Ce. Compaction of Ce-doped cobalt-ferrites under the influence of a magnetic field nearly doubled the λ, wheres the maximum dλ/dH increased by ~7 times. |
