Abstract Scope |
Magnetostrictive Fe-Ga alloys (Galfenol) find wide applications in actuators and sensors. We investigate the magnetic domain phenomena that underlie their magnetoelastic properties. In particular, magnetic domains and their responses to external magnetic field are examined in Fe-Ga alloys of different compositions and heat treatments. Domain imaging is performed using Bitter method. The observed various domain structures and evolutions are analyzed and consistently explained using domain theory. The dependency of magnetic domains on the composition and heat treatment is elucidated in light of the influences of magnetostriction on the energetics of magnetoelastic domain structures. Convincing evidence that resolves controversies regarding the peculiar cellular domains and zigzag domain boundaries in Fe-Ga alloys is presented. The findings advance our understanding of the domain phenomena and mechanisms responsible for the magnetoelastic behaviors of Fe-Ga alloys. |
