Presentation Title Microalloyed Forging Steels – Evolution from Laboratory to Industrial Application
Author(s) Chester J. Van Tyne
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Chester J. Van Tyne
Abstract Scope One of the most significant changes is forging steels during the twentieth century was the development and implementation of microalloyed steels for a variety of applications. The first large application of microalloys in steel was in the 1960s in the Alaskan pipeline. The use of microalloys elements in forging steels occurred in the 1980s with further improvements in the last decade of the century. Basic scientific studies on solubility limits and carbide and nitride precipitation provided the fundamental understanding needed to determine how these steels could be produced commercially. Steels with good strength and reasonable toughness can now be produced as forge components and significantly less production costs.
