Abstract Scope A heat resisting cast iron was prepared by adding an amounts of metal nickel to the cast iron that had been recoveried by carbothermal reduction of Bayer red mud (RM cast iron for short). The thermal behavior of RM cast iron was investigated by thermal analysis. The results show that the heat resistance of RM cast iron increases with the increasing of nickel content untill the nickel content gets to 22%. The weight loss of the samples during heating were compared among RM cast iron, QTANi35Si5Cr2 and RuTRSi4Mo1.The results showed the three alloys have a theoretical transition point, after which the oxidation suddenly increases. The transition point temperatures of RM-22,QTANi35Si5Cr2 and RuTRSi4Mo1 are 1092℃, 1160℃ and 1116℃ respectively. The mechanical properties of RM cast iron are better than those of QTANi35Si5Cr2 and RuTRSi4Mo1.In conclusion, RM cast iron is a high cost-effective material for automobile exhaust pipe.
