Presentation Title Connection Between Thermal Conductivity Degradation and Microstructural Changes in Graphite Due to Neutron Irradiation
Author(s) Anne A. Campbell
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Anne A. Campbell
Abstract Scope The thermal conductivity degradation of graphite when subjected to neutron irradiation has been quantified through numerous studies, because in graphite-moderated reactors the thermal conductivity reduction affects how well heat is transported through graphite, especially in cases where the fuel is located within graphite and heat has to flow through the graphite from the fuel to the coolant. There has long been speculation as to the microstructural changes that control this degradation but limited supporting evidence has been available. This talk will focus on work that has been performed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in recent years that is measuring the degradation of the thermal conductivity of graphite and microstructural investigations that are providing new insight into the microstructure features that are the sources of the degradation of the thermal conductivity of graphite.
