Abstract Scope Cationic polymermer polyethylenimine of variable molecular weight functionalized silver nanoparticles have been proven as antimicrobial agents against many pathogenic microorganisms. Our finding justified the antimicrobial properties of silver nanoparticles on their engineered physicochemical properties such as shape, size, surface charge (ζ-potential), ligand capping, doping, pH stability, roughness, and crystal structure revealing relationships between the specific physicochemical properties of silver nanoparticles. Polyethyleneimine has eased to achieve antimicrobial selectivity against bacteria and fungus. The findings justified how the surface functionalization of silver nanoparticles with a variable molecular weight of Polyethyleneimine modulates the size, zeta potential and affects nanoparticle interaction with the cell at the nano-bio interface. Similarly, the dynamics of cellular interaction and MIC values and cellular interaction dynamics of functionalized silver nanoparticles depended on the molecular weight of PEI in bacteria and fungus justifying antimicrobial activity of surface functionalized silver nanoparticles for a broad spectrum of pathogenic microorganisms
