Abstract Scope Platinum group metals (PGMs) are the most common electrode materials for implantable neural interfacing devices due to their noble properties and electrochemical performance. However, PGM manufacturing is expensive and challenging with possible health hazards. Additionally, PGMs are associated with high supply risk and significant economic importance. Consequently, PGMs are classified as critical raw materials, thus their recovery or substitution worldwide is of paramount importance. Since, postmortem recovery from deceased patients or refining of PGMs that are used in the manufacturing of electrodes is extremely rare, therefore, substitution of PGM-based electrodes with other electro-chemically active biocompatible materials is the only viable and sustainable solution to reduce and ultimately substitute the use of PGMs in these devices. In this work, the novel technique of “reactive hierarchical surface restructuring” will be presented, demonstrating how the surface of titanium electrodes undergoes compositional and topographical changes that will result in electrodes with superior electrochemical performance.
