About this Abstract
Meeting 2024 TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition
Symposium Formability and Spring-back Issues in Ultra-high Strength Steels and High Strength Aluminum Alloys
Presentation Title The “Next Era in Stamping Technology” (NEST), The Fundamentals of a Hybrid Stamping Technology
Author(s) Vincent Millioto
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Vincent Millioto
Abstract Scope As “Mega” and “Giga” castings find their way into a growing number of automotive Body-In-White (BIW) architectures, traditional stamping methods must adapt if they are to produce competitive product offerings. In keeping with those trends, the next generation(s) of stamped components are likely to be larger in size and made from the latest grades of Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS). Inevitably, part quality and press tonnage concerns will dominate the list of challenges that need to be overcome to enable this class of part. Hybrid Stamping Technology allows for the strategic addition of heat into a traditional stamping process. This adaptation allows for the formation of larger, more complex shapes at lower press tonnages. Symposium attendees will better understand the potential of a Hybrid Stamping Process and how the strategic addition of heat can ensure the viability of traditional processes and existing capital equipment for years to come.
