Symposium 2022 AWS Professional Program
Presentation Title 2020 Thomas Medal Presentation: Keeping Pace with Change
Author(s) Vincent van der Mee
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Vincent van der Mee
Abstract Scope Drafting this presentation in April 2020, it wasn’t realized how actual the title would be. That year, COVID-19 had forced many businesses to accelerate the adoption of new technologies or adjust their operating models in order to survive. COVID-19 had sped up the pace and scale of disruption to businesses. Responding to disruption was nothing new. What changed, was the source of the disruption and the urgency of the response. In this presentation topics like Keeping track of Standards, Classification Societies vs Standards / Industry Practice and Change in Standard status will be discussed. What is standard today might not be applicable in future. Globalization will require common Standards and there will be great advantage for international companies through considerable savings by avoiding multiple qualifications. What if classification societies specify requirements differently compared to Standards or Common industry practice. New is the Certification in the field of Additive Manufacturing. It is a rapidly expanding technology with great potential for novel component design. In Europe, BREXIT became active. Businesses had to prepare for the end of recognition of the CE mark in Great Brittan and affix the UK marking by 1 January 2022. Where did that end. Safety Data Sheets have been standardized, although requirements may differ per region, country or state, based on local laws or regulations, with measurements based on standard protocols. For Procurement of filler materials and fluxes, there is still disagreement in AWS and ISO standards that need to be resolved. Continues amendments to REACH, GHS and CLP Regulations require active involvement keeping latest technologies and points of view implemented. It is concluded that In a growing international welding world using different standards, there is a strong need for international standardization. For an international standard to be successful, it has to take regional codes into account. It has to be accepted in regional Fabrication codes, meaning National delegates and Industry need to agree. Adoption of new technologies and standards are required in order to survive.
