Presentation Title Development of Powder Materials for Metal AM

Abstract Scope Metal powder constitutes the most common feedstock used in metal additive manufacturing (AM). Considering specific conditions during component manufacturing by AM, tailoring or even totally new design of materials for metal AM is required to assure robust AM processing and defect-free high-performance AM materials. However, very often material design for AM is overlooking importance of powder manufacturing and resulting powder properties. At the same time, metal powder can be produced by the variety of methods, resulting in different powder properties. Further on, handling and AM processing of powder further affect powder properties and hence powder reusability. Hence, understanding the impact of powder properties during the whole process, from powder material development, powder atomization, handling and extensive powder reuse, is a must to ensure successful industrial implementation of powder-based metal AM. The challenges and outcomes of about 15 novel powder materials developed by CAM2 centre are summarized in this talk.
