Abstract Scope GA-EMS is implementing SiGAŽ cladding, a silicon carbide (SiC) fiber reinforced composite with outstanding accident tolerance, as a drop-in replacement for Zircaloy. Due to the extreme aspect ratio and high tolerances required for nuclear cladding, the needed manufacturing strategies to fabricate full length ceramic based parts must be addressed. Towards this goal, GA-EMS will present on its current progress towards full length fuel rods and the planned path toward lead test rods. Recent improvements in dimensional variations (i.e. outer diameter variation within specifications) and methods being used to characterize improvements will be presented. In addition, an update on in-house efforts towards a domestic source of nuclear grade SiC fiber will be provided.
