Abstract Scope The current methods for the hydrometallurgical extraction of cobalt and other metals from recycled lithium-ion batteries requires mineral acids like HCl, H2SO4, HNO3 and a significant quantity of reducing agents such as hydrogen peroxide. This study is an alternative strategy using an innovative electrochemical extraction method that could be more environmentally sustainable because reagent consumption may be less and because fewer toxic reagents are used. The effects of temperature, time, acid concentration, pulp density and choice of organic acid were studied upon the recovery of cobalt and lithium.
