Abstract Scope |
An important aspect of Energy Materials for Sustainable Development is within the transportation sector. In the area of air transport, there is a drive for electrification of the drive train. This drives a requirement for high power density motors (> 20 kW/kg) as well as driving power sources and power transmission technology. Superconductors and cryogenic conductors are interesting and enabling materials for these applications. This talk reviews our work in the area of superconducting and cryogenic materials for electric aircraft motors and power transmission cables using high purity aluminum at cryogenic temperatures, as well as Al-Be alloys and superconducting materials. In the area of superconducting materials, MgB2 is more relevant to stator windings, while YBCO has advantages for rotors and transmission cables. Here we consider the overall loss balance for various advanced conductors including ohmic, superconducting, coupling current contributions, and the tradeoffs for various system components. |
