Abstract Scope |
Digital twins offer new pathways to qualification and certification of additively manufactured parts, which currently rely on substantial destructive material testing. However, in materials such as Ti-6Al-4V, commonly printed in the aerospace and biomedical fields, a reliable model of the microstructure is essential to predicting mechanical properties. This work models the alpha-morphology of Ti-6Al-4V printed via laser powder bed fusion and post-processed by annealing and/or hot isostatic pressing (HIP) treatments. To increase accuracy, a sensitivity study was conducted to determine the impact of impurities including Fe and O on key parameters such as the beta-transus temperature and vanadium diffusivity. Furthermore, martensite decomposition via diffusional transformation into equilibrium alpha-morphologies was modeled to simulate heat treatment and HIP processes. Simulations of the as-printed and heat-treated microstructures were validated via comparison with SEM and EBSD of as-printed, heat-treated and HIP’d tensile samples. |
