| Abstract Scope |
Demanding applications usually force trade-offs among material properties in traditional single-material components. Today, additive manufacturing enables the creation of compositionally graded materials to locally optimize performance. However, this approach simultaneously introduces new fabrication related challenges such as elemental intermixing during deposition and unknown material properties at interfaces between regions of different material compositions. In this talk we first introduce a simple model that describes compositional dilution during directed energy deposition. We then discuss a strategy to compensate for the dilution to align with the intended compositional grading, contextualized around reusable rocket propulsion applications. |
