Abstract Scope |
The Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion (E-PBF) uses an electron beam to melt materials pixel by pixel. In this study, a new spot scan strategy was introduced, called island scanning. Unlike traditional scanning strategies, this innovative approach evenly distributes heat across each layer by dividing the area into equal-sized squares and melting spots randomly with weighted normal distribution, which enhances microstructure control in Ti-6Al-4V samples. Polished crosssections were analyzed using Electron Backscatter Diffraction. The results show that the new scanning strategy creates distinctly different microstructures compared to traditional Dehoff. Specificly, it produces finer and more evenly distributed α-grains and tunable large and long grains aligned with build direction. Moreover, its reduced misorientation values show lowered residual stress. Reconstruction of parent β-phase shows continuous columnar structures thoroughly, allowing predictable selection of α-variants. Conclusively, the proposed scanning strategy offers a flexible approach to create E-PBF components tailored for specific performance needs. |
