Presentation Title Creating a Trauma Informed Environment: A Survivors Perspective
Author(s) Andrew K. Hoffman
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Andrew K. Hoffman
Abstract Scope Trauma is often misunderstood and stigmatized in todays society. There is often a notion that you have to be a veteran of combat to be "qualified" for a post traumatic stress disorder diagnosis (PTSD). In reality there are a number of events in our lives that can cause PTSD and complex PTSD (CPTSD). Serious trauma can cause extreme distress, panic attacks, and emotionally painful experiences with even seemingly innocent actions as triggers. Creating an environment which helps survivors dealing with these difficult symptoms includes developing systems where psychological safety is not just talked about but strongly enforced. This talk will focus on the perspective of a survivor of trauma, what is the mindset behind triggers, how can others around those dealing with trauma be supportive, and what are some major pitfalls to avoid. Audience participation from those who feel comfortable sharing their own experiences is encouraged.
