Abstract Scope Thermal expansion is an integral material property for calculating the line sag of overhead power transmission cables. With joule heating as the dominant heating source, induced by electrical resistance of the cable and current flow, fluctuations in electric demand vary the conductor temperature significantly thereby sag through thermal expansion. Thus, a lower linear coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) improves the cable temperature rating. An Al-Ca deformation processed metal-metal composite (DMMC) synthesized through a powder route exhibits significantly reduced CTE compared to other aluminum-matrix composites. The reduced CTE is attributed to strong, low CTE intermetallic compounds embedded in aluminum matrix as a continuous filament. This study will compare the linear CTE of Al-Ca composites at three different compositions and tempers. The CTE provides an estimation for Al-Ca conductor sag at operating temperatures with respect to filament spacing and composition for use as overhead high voltage conductor cable technology.
