Abstract Scope Although the effect of various annealing parameters on the final microstructure, texture, and magnetic properties of non-oriented electrical steel has been investigated extensively, the study on the hot band annealing process was rarely seen in the literature. In this work, a hot rolled 2.8 wt% Si non-oriented electrical steel was annealed at 800 °C for an accumulated time of 400 min. The annealing was interrupted 14 times and at each of which, the microstructure and microtexture of the same region were examined under electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). In this way, the evolution of the microstructure and microtexture was tracked in a quasi-in-situ manner. It is seen that, the layered structures formed after hot rolling result in different recrystallization behaviors and microstructures/textures after hot band annealing, which significantly impact the microstructure and texture of the cold rolled steel and those of the final annealed material.
