Presentation Title Extrusion Based 3-D Printing of Reinforced SiC Using Hydrogel Pastes

Abstract Scope UHTC materials have been of interest for hypersonic flight for decades and interest has grown over the years. The focus of this work is the additive manufacturing of ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) of silicon carbide (SiC) with short fibrous material (i.e., carbon fiber or carbon nanotube (CNT) fibers). The SiC powder and fibers are mixed at high speeds with a hydrogel (as means of keeping the ceramic powder in suspension) to ensure homogeneity and are printed using extrusion-based 3-D printing. The slurries are printed from nozzle tips with an inner diameter ranging from 1.55-0.2mm with a layer height equal to or slightly smaller than the diameter. Once a viable slurry was mixed and extruded, the prints underwent different debinding cycles until a successful burnout was achieved. Sintering followed, and the prints were tested for density, purity, ablation resistance, and fracture toughness.
