Abstract Scope |
Hydrogen-based ironmaking offers significant mitigation of CO2 emissions as compared with traditional blast-furnace approaches. While H2-based reduction benefits from high reactivity and reaction rates, H2 utilization ratios remain low with existing technologies, due to the elevated concentrations and temperatures required for complete reduction. In this work, we investigate the progression and metallization of laser-assisted hematite reduction, which enables heating to the sub-melt regime and rapid heating rates. Utilizing in-situ X-ray diffraction, we quantify the phase distribution across the full solid sample reduced in 3 environments: H2, argon, and vacuum. We demonstrate the reduction mechanisms and performance from intense light absorption, illustrating a new opportunity for ironmaking. |
