Abstract Scope |
The transition toward sustainable metallurgy requires closed-loop solutions that minimize material waste and carbon emissions. This study presents an integrated recycling–additive manufacturing framework for producing near-net-shape metal components using secondary feedstocks. Post-industrial scrap from titanium and stainless steel is refined via plasma spheroidization into powders suitable for Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF). Optimized processing parameters enable high-quality prints with mechanical properties comparable to parts made from virgin powders. Microstructural evaluation using SEM, EBSD, and XRD confirms refined grain structures and phase integrity. In-situ monitoring and CT scanning verify low defect levels and structural consistency. A cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment reveals up to 40% reduction in carbon footprint, underscoring the environmental viability of the approach. This work demonstrates a scalable pathway for circular metallurgy by uniting waste valorization and high-performance part fabrication without compromising material integrity.
