Abstract Scope |
One of the compelling mysteries offered by metallic glasses is the experimental observation of medium-range order (MRO). Observed in scattering experiments to extend over a length scale of 1-2 nm, it has been a topic of research and debate for several decades. At a basic level there is a conceptual difficulty – in a structure that is characterized by short-range order and the absence of long-range order, what exactly is MRO? Where does it begin and why does it end? Experimental methods to detect MRO and to quantify the distance that it covers will be reviewed. A simple physical picture will be developed to illustrate what MRO is and how it can be embedded in a structure with no long-range order. Finally, a description of the specific nature of MRO in metallic glasses will be given and supported by data from scattering experiments. |
