Abstract Scope |
Copper-based feedstocks are of interest to the marine as well as aerospace industries for their strength and corrosion resistance as well as excellent electrical and thermal conductivity. Furthermore, directed energy deposition (DED) processes are ideal to produce large scale structural components for these applications. In this study, a wide range of copper-based feedstocks including deoxidized copper, silicon bronze, aluminum bronze, nickel bronze, and nickel aluminum bronze were processed with gas metal arc directed energy deposition (GMA-DED), and the solidification structure and weldability were evaluated. In addition, the precipitate coarsening behavior in GRCop-42 processed with electron beam based DED was studied and compared to other AM deposition processes. The results of this work are expected to provide a deeper understanding of welding metallurgy of copper-based feedstocks to enable a broader application of these materials for structural applications.
