Abstract Scope |
Cu is known for its desirable properties and has been widely employed in biomedical materials to boost their antibacterial ability. However, very few structural implants are made from Cu due to its malleability and low strength. Additionally, Cu poses a challenge in additive manufacturing due to its high reflectivity and thermal conductivity. Carbon Nanotubes are known to enhance mechanical properties of composites. This study focuses on powder bed laser additive manufacturing of Cu and Cu-CNT composites made to be applied as biomedical implants. The porous Cu and Cu-CNT materials are fabricated using laser powder bed process. Mechanical, electrical and thermal characteristics of these composites are then evaluated and compared with standard material made using the conventional techniques. Biocompatibility is then evaluated using mural models and results are presented. Recommendations are provided to the community on optimum processing approach to achieve desirable properties. |
