Abstract Scope |
Tungsten is the leading plasma facing material (PFM) candidate for fusion reactors due to its attractive thermo-physical properties and resistance to sputtering. As a PFM, tungsten will need to be fabricated into functional components with intricate geometric features, but its limited ductility makes it challenging to machine into complex parts. Laser-based additive manufacturing (AM) techniques are an attractive alternative method to fabricate complex geometries, but it is challenging to fabricate crack-free AM-W. In this talk, we will present a CALPHAD-based alloy design strategy to fabricate AM-W materials, where Ti and Fe additions are used to tailor solidification pathways and introduce secondary phases that prevent crack formation. We will discuss these results in the context of laser processing parameters and benchmark against pure AM-W. We will also highlight the relationships between the microstructure and resulting properties of these new AM-W alloys. Finally, we will discuss their stability at application-relevant temperatures. |
