| Abstract Scope |
In continuous casting, cleanliness of the final steel product is significantly affected by liquid steel flow in the mold and strand. During a ladle exchange, temperature, bath height, and flow behaviour vary significantly in the tundish, which influences superheat and inclusions entering the caster. In this study, a coupled multiphase flow model is developed to study turbulent flow, heat transfer, and inclusion transport in a two-strand tundish, mold and strand. Simulation of four successive heats reveal the effect of ladle exchanges on the flow, temperature and inclusion behaivour in the tundish for realistic plant conditions involving different flow rates to each strand. Further, mold and strand simulations are being conducted to investigate the effects of these variations in superheat and inclusion distribution on inclusion capture in the final product. Results are compared with plant measurements of temperature variation and inclusion distribution to provide new understanding of phenomena during ladle exchanges. |
