| Abstract Scope |
There are numerous studies on macrosegregation defect prediction in large steel castings. However, in most of these studies a full set of material properties, constitutive equations, and model implementation algorithms are not given. In this study we focus on identifying several challenges in the modeling and simulation of macrosegregation in large steel castings. Numerical simulations were conducted using the ProCAST software by considering the solidification shrinkage and the formation of the shrinkage heat pipe in the steel ingot. It was found that local variation of C concentration right below the hot-top region near the mold surface resembles that typical to freckles, i.e., channel segregation. It was shown that distribution of the segregation index along the ingot centerline is in good agreement with the published experimental data. |
