Abstract Scope |
For several decades a wide range of synchrotron X-ray imaging techniques have been developed to help solve materials science challenges. In this talk we’ll show how tools developed for materials science can be applied to give novel insights into a range of other fields, from volcanology to fracking shales to back pain. Starting with the example of volcanology, we’ll show how an in situ rig developed for studying the mechanical response of three phase (solid, liquid and gas) semi-solid Al and Ni alloys was adapted to characterise magma as it flows from kilometres below the earth to its surface – simulating a volcanic eruption. Next, we’ll investigate how materials science techniques can quantify the fracture behaviour of shales as they are fracked, including capturing the evolving microstructural features. We’ll conclude with how some of these techniques might help quantify and model the behaviour of our intervertebral discs as they age. |
