Abstract Scope |
The transition towards low-carbon steelmaking is opening new commercial opportunities for alternative reduction technologies. Biomass-based direct reduced iron (DRI) offers significant greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction potential, but its market competitiveness depends on techno-economic performance. This study evaluates the commercial feasibility of biomass-based DRI compared to conventional coal-based DRI in India, focusing on capital and operating cost, DRI production cost, and simple payback period under various biomass prices and carbon tax scenarios. Financial modelling and sensitivity analysis using plant-scale data reveal that while initial capital investment is higher, biomass-based DRI may be cost-competitive under moderate carbon pricing and policy support. Key commercial drivers include sustainable biomass supply chain stability, carbon credits, and market premiums for green steel. The findings provide strategic insights for steelmakers, investors, and policymakers to assess business risks and investment opportunities in biomass-based DRI projects within emerging low-carbon markets. |
