| Abstract Scope |
Ladle changeover is a critical operation that alters the fluid dynamics of liquid steel in the tundish, inducing flow phenomena that affect operational efficiency. To reduce flow-related issues associated with this operation, the objective of the current research is to demonstrate how an appropriate internal configuration of the tundish can achieve this goal. A numerical model was developed using the conservation equations of mass and momentum, with the standard k–ε turbulence model and the VOF model. The results showed that the baffle confined the slag and air emulsifications to the tundish inlet region, with a permanent slag layer opening. In contrast, the use of a turbulence inhibitor and dam reduced the maximum emulsification and maximum slag opening by 92% and 76%, respectively, achieving complete slag closure in 37 s, proving that an appropriate selection of fluid control devices can significantly improve tundish performance during ladle changeover. |
