| Abstract Scope |
The use of Inconel 718 is widely employed in the energy industry. The advent of additive manufacturing, particularly using arc-based processes, is now critical for such industry owing to the high deposition rates and easy operation enabled. However, the thermal cycles associated to arc-based additive manufacturing are often associated to undesired microstructure features that must be overcome before the fabricated materials are considered for a given application. Here, we will show how the microstruture of Inconel 718 fabricated by arc-based additive manufacturing can be tuned by process development and subsequent heat treaments. Optimal choice of processing conditions enable the use of these materials in critical energy applications since the resulting mechanical properties surpase the industry standards. A combination of advanced materials characterization and mechanical testing is used to unveil processing/microstructure/properties relationships. |
