| Abstract Scope |
Blast furnaces account for the majority of global iron metal production. The carbon monoxide that drives the iron ore reduction forward is produced by a combination of combustion and reduction reactions. These reactions occur in and around the raceway, a region formed by the lateral injection of blast gas into the coke bed. This study presents a framework using a coupled computational fluid dynamics-discrete element method (CFD-DEM) to simulate the raceway region of the blast furnace, for which direct measurement remains difficult. The current approach not only simulates a 3D industrial-scale furnace using periodic boundary conditions but also predicts the effects of tuyere angle and heterogeneous chemical reactions on the raceway shape. It is further able to demonstrate the time evolution of raceway formation, coke bed momentum and temperature, and chemical kinetics until steady state. |
