Presentation Title SDSM&T Bladesmithing – British Infantry Sword – Historical Aspects

Abstract Scope The SDSM&T team will share results on the heat treatment and decoration of a British 1845 Pattern Infantry Officer’s Sword. The decoration portion of the presentation will cover historical methods of etching steel, as well as the team’s trials to reproduce the historical results. The heat treatment portion of the presentation will cover the process of historical tempering of 1095 steel in liquid lead, and the results of ductility and impact properties of steel tempered in liquid lead at various times and temperatures.
