Abstract Scope |
There has been considerable recent research activity for improving accident tolerance of fuel cladding in light water reactors (LWRs). However, the survivability of control rod assembly at high temperatures must also be investigated, where excessive oxidation and the formation of low melting point eutectic phases between stainless steel control rod sheaths and Zr guide tubes or neutron absorbing materials can be a concern. Results of research on Cr cold spray coatings for potential control rod sheath materials and new neutron absorbers (e.g., HfO2, Eu2O3, Sm2O3) to address the above challenges, coupled with thermo-mechanical modeling of these new materials’ concepts will be presented. The oxidation resistance of the control rod sheath materials has been investigated in 1200oC steam environment. The efficacy of the coatings as diffusion barrier has been investigated at temperatures up to 1300oC using diffusion couple experiments followed by experimental evaluation of interfacial phase evolution supported by modeling. |
