Abstract Scope |
A cylindrical cooled probe (cold-finger) has been used to investigate fouling in the off-gas duct located upstream from the gas cleaning system during primary aluminium production. Thermocouples and heat flux sensors allowed for the monitoring of the global and local heat transfer on both the front and rear sides of the probe placed in cross-flow from the off-gas. Hard scale was formed on the front side of the probe whereas loose deposits accumulated on the rear side, causing inhomogeneous fouling resistance along the cold-finger circumference. Additionally, a static pressure-drop monitor system was installed upstream of the probe to monitor the off-gas velocity variations. A model was developed for analysis of the heat transfer data, and identification of different phenomena allowing for deconvolution of the rather oscillating heat transfer patterns. The subsequent analysis of deposit cross-sections was later used to validate the fouling factor derived from the heat transfer analysis. |
