Abstract Scope AA5083 is popular in naval applications for its excellent corrosion resistance despite limited mechanical strength. Grain refinement of AA5083 nanocomposite can enhance its mechanical strength without compromising its corrosion resistance. Friction stir processing (FSP) is an effective technique for modifying the microstructure of Al alloys and composites through frictional heat and plastic deformation. This study investigates microstructural evolution and mechanical behavior of stir-casted AA5083-2%SiC nanocomposite through cryogenic cooling-controlled FSP (cryo-FSP), in comparison to room temperature FSP. Specimens were processed at optimized parameters using an indigenously designed cryo-FSP setup, in which mixture (at -30ºC) of liquid nitrogen and methanol was circulated to cool Cu-made backing plate during FSP. Cryo-FSPed sample exhibited superior mechanical properties due to evolution of fine-grained structure (~1µm) in the nanocomposite, with uniform distribution of n-SiC particles, as opposed to the ~4 µm grains of RT-FSPed sample. SEM-EBSD and TEM confirmed fine-grain recrystallization and n-SiC particle redistribution.
