Abstract Scope Centrifuge tests are large-scale operations commonly performed on fully assembled weapons systems and thus require a lot of planning and expense. Explosive mocks, inert materials used in place of high explosives in some testing and training environments, are often used in centrifuge tests without previous knowledge of their behavior in these environments. Given the time and cost of large-scale testing, small-scale testing of newly developed mocks under relevant conditions is appealing. This study investigates the effectiveness of benchtop-scale centrifuge testing as a representative scaling step to determine suitability of mock-explosive pairings. 10 materials were tested, using 3 different centrifugal loading conditions and 3 different thermal cycling histories. Post-test analysis was done with X-ray computed tomography (XCT) and quasistatic compression. Effectiveness of scaling, size effects, and internal and external loading environments will be discussed.
